Poker is a family card games of science and art. It is a combination of gambling, strategy, and skill.
It was developed sometime in the early 19th century and has moved from being a recreational activity for enthusiasts to a common activity worldwide—even in the online world—enjoyed by participants and spectators.
There is one objective, and that is to win the combined bets of all participants which is called the pot.
Since then, Poker has spun off into many different variations but with a similar pattern of play and the same ranking of hands.
One of the variants formed is Big O, which surfaced in Southern California in 2008.
Considered a fun variant of poker, Big O is similar to Omaha, but instead of getting 4 hole cards, there are five cards per hand. Because of its similarity to Omaha, it is sometimes called the five-card Omaha or Omaha-5.
But with more cards in the game, there is an increase in the number of possible hand combinations and creates more action.
How to play Big O
In playing the game, a player has 2 cards on hand and 3 on the board to contest both a low and high side of the pot.
With the increased card count compared to Omaha, Big O can be played by up to 9 players. It is more commonly played as a hi-lo game, with the low and high hands splitting the pot.
When played with 9 players, there are fewer cards in the deck for the dealer to burn—or remove the top card from the undealt portion of the deck. With players less than 9, the dealer burns prior every board deal like in other flop games.
Players place their bets in four rounds, namely during preflop (or right after players are dealt with cards), on the flop (or after the first three board cards are exposed), after the fourth card is revealed, and after the fifth and final board card is unveiled.
Players need to consider some factors when playing Big O, namely:
pairs – which can be turned into sets, full houses or quads
highness – the higher value your cards have, the more chances to make higher pairs or sets
connectedness -smaller gaps in your hand means more opportunities to make straights
suitedness – the same suit or best possible combination of the hand
